6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route

A steep, direct, and less-traveled route for experienced trekkers seeking a challenge.

The Umbwe Route is the most difficult and steepest trail up Kilimanjaro. It is suitable for well prepared climbers with high-altitude experience. The trail is scenic but offers minimal time for acclimatization.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

Begin a steep climb through dense rainforest to reach Umbwe Cave Camp.

Distance: 11 km | Duration: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (3,976m)

Hike through heath and moorland, emerging onto ridges with great views before descending into the Barranco Valley.

Distance: 6 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall and cross rolling terrain to reach Karanga Camp.

Distance: 5 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Trek uphill toward Barafu Base Camp where you’ll prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Distance: 4 km | Duration: 3–4 hours

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Begin your summit attempt at midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After celebration, descend to Mweka Camp for rest.

Distance: 17 km | Duration: 12–14 hours

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi/Arusha

Final descent through rainforest. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel.

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 3–4 hours
