7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route

A steep, scenic, and less-traveled route for experienced trekkers.

The Umbwe Route is the most direct and challenging route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steep ascent and dramatic views, it’s ideal for experienced and well-acclimatized hikers. This 7-day itinerary includes additional acclimatization time, improving summit success rates.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

The trek begins with a steep ascent through dense rainforest, rich with moss and giant fig trees.

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (3,976m)

Continue up a ridge with breathtaking views and transition into the moorland zone.

Distance: 6 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Heath & Moorland

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp

Rest and explore the area around Barranco. Optional hike up the Barranco Wall for acclimatization.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall and descend into the beautiful Karanga Valley.

Distance: 5 km | Duration: 4–5 hours

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Trek up to the base camp, Barafu, and rest before the final summit attempt.

Distance: 4 km | Duration: 3–4 hours

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Early morning summit push. After reaching Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.

Distance: 17 km | Duration: 12–14 hours

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi/Arusha

Final descent through lush rainforest. Receive your summit certificate and return to your hotel.

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 3–4 hours
