7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Rongai Route

The only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border.

The Rongai Route offers a quiet and remote wilderness experience. It is ideal during the rainy season, as the northern side of the mountain receives less rainfall. The 7-day itinerary allows for proper acclimatization and increases the chances of reaching the summit.

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,600m)

After a drive to the northeastern side of Kilimanjaro, start the hike through a pine forest.

Distance: 8 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp (3,450m)

The trail ascends steadily through moorland, with views of the eastern ice fields.

Distance: 9 km | Duration: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

Leave the main trail and head towards Mawenzi, enjoying spectacular scenery.

Distance: 6 km | Duration: 3–4 hours

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes, reaching a camp beneath the rugged Mawenzi Peak.

Distance: 6 km | Duration: 3–4 hours

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, reaching the base camp before the summit night.

Distance: 9 km | Duration: 5–6 hours

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Midnight summit attempt to Gilman’s Point and then Uhuru Peak. Descend to Horombo for rest.

Distance: 21 km | Duration: 12–14 hours

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Transfer to Moshi/Arusha

Final descent through the rainforest. Collect your summit certificate and return to your hotel.

Distance: 20 km | Duration: 5–7 hours
