8 Days Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route

The most challenging and steepest route to Uhuru Peak, ideal for experienced trekkers seeking adventure and solitude.

The Umbwe Route is known for its steep ascent and dramatic scenery. It is less traveled, offering a quiet and more direct path to the summit. While physically demanding, it joins the Machame route at Barranco Camp and offers incredible views.

Day 1: Arrival – Transfer to Hotel (Optional)

Pick-up from Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha for rest and briefing.

Accommodation not included – available on request.

Day 2: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

Begin your steep trek through the rainforest. The trail is narrow and direct.

Distance: 10 km | Duration 5–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 3: Umbwe Cave – Barranco Camp (3,900m)

Climb through heath zone and scramble over ridges before reaching Barranco Valley.

Distance: 6 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Heath & Moorland

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Ascend the iconic Barranco Wall and follow scenic ridges to Karanga.

Distance: 5 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)
  • Trek to Barafu, the base camp for your summit push.

    Distance: 4 km | Duration: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
  • Midnight start for the summit attempt. After reaching Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp.

    Distance: 15 km | Duration:  12–14 hours | Habitat: Arctic to rainforest

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Transfer to Town

Final descent through the forest to the gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi/Arusha.

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 3–4 hours

Day 8: Rest Day or Departure
  • Enjoy relaxation or airport transfer (if accommodation booked separately)
