The Marangu Route is one of the most popular paths to the summit of Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation, making it a comfortable choice for many climbers. The route ascends and descends on the same trail, passing through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone.
After registration at the gate, begin your hike through the rainforest to Mandara Hut.
Distance: 8 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Rainforesta
Ascend through heath and moorland zones with scenic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Distance: 11 km | Duration: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Moorland
A rest day to acclimatize with a short hike to Mawenzi Ridge before returning to Horombo for the night.
Distance: 5–7 km | Duration: 3–5 hours
Trek across the alpine desert to Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt.
Distance: 10 km | Duration: 5–7 hours
Early morning summit push via Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa. Then descend to Horombo Hut.
Distance: 21 km | Duration: 12–14 hours
Descend through Mandara Hut to the Marangu Gate, collect your summit certificate, and return to Moshi/Arusha.
Distance: 19 km | Duration: 5–7 hours
