8 Days Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route

The Most Popular Route to the Roof of Africa

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route”, is one of the most scenic and rewarding trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers diverse landscapes, great acclimatization, and a high success rate for reaching the summit. This route is perfect for adventurous trekkers ready for a challenge with unforgettable views.

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Hotel (Optional)

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Optional transfer to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for briefing and overnight stay (Accommodation not included but can be arranged.)

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)

Drive to Machame Gate and begin the trek through lush rainforest to Machame Camp.

Distance: 11 km | Time: 5–7 hrs | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 3: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840m)

Climb through moorland with beautiful views toward Shira Plateau.

Distance: 5 km |Time: 4–6 hrs | Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Valley.

Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–8 hrs | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Climb the iconic Barranco Wall and continue through alpine terrain to Karanga Camp.

Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–5 hrs | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Short, steep climb to Barafu Camp. Rest and prepare for summit night.

Distance: 4 km | Time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Begin summit attempt at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Mweka Camp.

Distance: 15 km | Time: 12–14 hrs | Habitat: Arctic to Forest

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Departure
  • Final descent through lush forest to the gate. Collect summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi/Arusha.

    Distance: 10 km | Time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Rainforest

  • Mineral water on Day 1, boiled water afterward
