6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route

The most popular and scenic route to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain.

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” offers beautiful views, varied landscapes, and a high summit success rate due to its excellent acclimatization profile. It’s ideal for those with good fitness and a desire for a scenic challenge.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,010m)

Start your climb through lush rainforest after park registration.

Distance: 11 km | Duration: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840m)

Trek into the heather zone and enjoy views across the Shira Plateau.

Distance: 8 km | Duration: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,976m)

Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Valley.

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 6–8 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall, pass Karanga Camp, and reach Barafu Base Camp.

Distance: 9 km | Duration: 8–9 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak via Stella Point. Descend to Mweka Camp for rest.

Distance: 17 km | Duration: 12–14 hours

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi/Arusha

Final descent through the forest. Receive your summit certificate at the gate.

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 3–4 hours
